Katie Zacharia, the new White House press secretary, is either 41 or 42, and outlets don’t agree. Hollywoodlife and SBS say 41, with Hollywoodlife giving a birth date of March 8, 1985. Il Sole 24 Ore and Salon say 42, and Il Sole gives March 23, 1984. I couldn’t find an official White House bio with a birth date, so I can’t settle it.
President Trump announced her on October 9, 2026, to succeed Karoline Leavitt. Here’s what’s known about her age, her background, her family, and a dispute over her law credentials.
Quick Facts
- Age: 41 or 42, depending on the source
- Role: White House press secretary, announced October 9, 2026
- Replaces: Karoline Leavitt
- Husband: Tyler Zacharia, a film producer
- Children: four, per Hollywoodlife and Salon
- Previous job: communications adviser to Trump Media & Technology Group, per Salon and SBS
So, How Old Is She?
Two birth dates are in circulation, and they differ by a year.
- March 8, 1985: Hollywoodlife’s date, which makes her 41. Hollywoodlife doesn’t say where it got it. SBS also gives 41.
- March 23, 1984: Il Sole 24 Ore’s date, which makes her 42. Salon also says 42.
A year of difference isn’t a rounding error, so one pair of outlets is wrong. I’d write “41 or 42” and say reports differ, or leave the age out until the White House or a primary source states it. I looked for a Wikipedia entry, but the page I tried wasn’t available.
How She Got the Job
Salon says Trump announced the pick on Truth Social on Friday, October 9, 2026. Trump wrote that she has “an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning,” and called her “a devoted fan and member of MAGA!”
Leavitt had said in August that she was stepping down, citing her family, per Salon. Il Sole says Leavitt has since joined a pro-Trump super PAC and was named a Fox News commentator.
Zacharia posted her own statement on X on October 9, per Hollywoodlife, thanking Trump “for the distinguished privilege of serving as White House Press Secretary.” She added: “Following the fabulous Karoline Leavitt is a high standard, and one worth meeting.”
Her Career Before the White House
Different outlets list different pieces of her résumé, and some of it comes from her LinkedIn page.
- Conservative commentator: She’s appeared on Fox News and Newsmax, per SBS and Hollywoodlife.
- Fix California: Hollywoodlife and SBS (citing LinkedIn) say she was a legal adviser for this conservative group.
- Trump Media & Technology Group: Communications adviser, per Salon and Il Sole; SBS also lists her as an adviser to the company.
- Homeland Security: Deputy assistant secretary for public affairs from February 2026, per Hollywoodlife and Salon. SBS says she left in March.
- Earlier: SBS says she interned at the White House under George W. Bush and holds a law degree from Pepperdine University.
On why she left Homeland Security, Salon reports she was pushed out, and links that to a reported relationship that I couldn’t confirm anywhere else. Because it’s a personal allegation from one outlet, I’m not repeating it. The only firm fact is that she left in March 2026.

The Law Degree Question
This is the most-discussed story about her background so far, and SBS covers it in detail.
Trump described her as an attorney when he announced her, and she’d called herself a lawyer in earlier interviews. Journalist Judd Legum reported he found no evidence she’d passed a bar exam or been admitted to practice in any state, per SBS. When asked which state she passed the bar in, she appeared to answer, “when I moved to China.”
SBS adds that The Washington Post reported that China doesn’t allow foreign nationals to practice Chinese law in its courts. A White House statement said she moved to China with her husband after graduating, because of his job at a private equity firm, and worked there on international transaction law.
Those are claims and counter-claims, and I haven’t seen a bar record myself. A law degree and a license to practice are different things, and that’s where the argument sits.
Her Husband and Family
Tyler Zacharia is a film producer, per Hollywoodlife, which cites his IMDb profile for credits including “The Irishmen,” “Countdown,” and “Roofman.” The couple married in 2011, per the same article, and have four children, according to Hollywoodlife and Salon.
I’m sticking to what’s been published about the family and leaving out names or ages of the children.
Her First Briefing
SBS says her first briefing came on a Tuesday and lasted about 15 minutes, with questions from three reporters from Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail. She announced that Trump had asked his ambassador to Greece to resign after a bribery scandal.
She said of the job: “I get to do what I was doing on the outside already.” At one point she slipped, saying “my president, excuse me, my husband,” per SBS. Trump later said, “I thought she was very good.”
Timeline
- March 2026: Leaves her Homeland Security role
- August 2026: Leavitt announces she’s stepping down
- October 9, 2026: Trump announces Zacharia; she posts her statement on X
- October 13, 2026: First briefing, a Tuesday, per SBS
What Didn’t Sit Right in the Coverage
The age mix-up is the obvious one. The birth years differ, and none of the pieces say where theirs came from. I’d also point out that Il Sole’s piece includes a line saying “he is also a lawyer at Fix California” that doesn’t seem to describe her, which suggests careless editing.
Hollywoodlife ran an “age” explainer without citing a source for the birth date, and its piece doesn’t mention the legal credential dispute at all. And a lot of early coverage treats the LinkedIn profile as proof of her résumé, when it’s self-reported.
What We Don’t Know
- Her confirmed birth date
- Whether she’s admitted to practice law anywhere
- Her full education history. SBS lists Pepperdine; Hollywoodlife doesn’t mention education
- Why she left Homeland Security, beyond the date
conclusion
Katie Zacharia is a longtime conservative commentator who’s now the face of the White House press office. Her age is 41 or 42, and I’d say so plainly. The more important open question for readers is the one about her legal credentials, which the White House has answered in part.
How much should a press secretary’s résumé matter compared with how she does the job? Tell me in the comments.
