This is a sad story, and I’ve tried to stick to what outlets have confirmed and who said it. Below is what’s known, what’s still open, and what to be careful with if you cover it.
Quick Facts
- Name: RJ Mitte, known for playing Walter “Flynn” White Jr.
- Age: 34
- Date: Monday, October 12, 2026, per TMZ and Hollywoodlife
- Place: Texas, per TMZ. Hollywoodlife, citing People, says his home in Brownsville
- Cause: reported as suicide by TMZ; see below for sourcing
- Investigation: ongoing, per TMZ’s report of law enforcement
- Engaged to: Kennedy Suarez, whom he proposed to in 2025
What Has Been Confirmed
His representatives gave TMZ a statement that began: “It is with profound sadness we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist…” The BBC, Variety, and Deadline carried the same statement, per ABC Australia. TMZ also says a county official confirmed the death to it.
Hollywoodlife reports that Brownsville police received a call at 12:50 p.m. local time and found him dead, citing People. I couldn’t open the People piece, so that detail is secondhand.
How the Cause Was Reported
TMZ’s report, citing unnamed sources, was the first to say he died by suicide. Its article doesn’t cite an official confirmation of the cause. Hollywoodlife later wrote that one of his representatives confirmed the suicide. A Variety headline also says the cause was confirmed, but I couldn’t open that article, so I can’t say who confirmed it or how.
I haven’t seen a medical examiner’s finding or a statement from his family. ABC Australia, which carried only the death announcement, said the cause was not disclosed. In short, the cause comes from TMZ’s sources and a rep’s reported confirmation, not from an official finding that I could read.
I’m leaving out any detail about how he died, and I’d advise anyone covering this to do the same. Guidelines for responsible reporting on suicide ask outlets not to describe methods, and to avoid guessing at reasons.
His Final Days
Hollywoodlife says it’s unclear what happened in his last days. He was reportedly still making public appearances and seeing friends and family the week before.
TMZ says he spent time earlier in October with his “Breaking Bad” co-star Luis Moncada, and that they looked to be in good spirits in social media posts. Hollywoodlife also says he appeared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast five days before the news, talking about the show’s ending. He said: “I don’t think it was an end.”
None of this explains what happened, and I wouldn’t read anything into it. How someone looks online isn’t a reliable guide to how they’re doing.
Who Was RJ Mitte?
Mitte appeared in 56 episodes of “Breaking Bad,” which ran from 2008 to 2013, per TMZ. He played Walter White Jr., the teenager with cerebral palsy, the same condition Mitte had. He was diagnosed at age three, per ABC Australia. He didn’t use crutches in daily life, per Hollywoodlife.
Other credits include “The Oak Room,” “The Recall,” and “The Guardians of Justice (Will Save You!),” per TMZ.
He told Untitled magazine in 2014: “Living with a disability doesn’t make you disabled,” per Hollywoodlife. ABC Australia quotes him describing “Breaking Bad” as giving him “an outlet to speak on so many important topics.”
Advocacy Work
His representatives said he built a platform around disability awareness and served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, per TMZ. ABC Australia says he was a spokesperson for Cut the Bull, an anti-bullying campaign run with Shriners Hospitals for Children.
In 2015, he said, “Cerebral palsy and mental health go hand in hand,” per ABC Australia. I’m quoting it because he said it publicly about his own advocacy, not because it explains his death. Nobody has said it does.

What Didn’t Sit Right in the Coverage
Some headlines say “cause of death revealed” or “confirmed,” but the sourcing I could verify is TMZ’s anonymous sources and a rep’s reported confirmation. That’s worth flagging, since this is a sensitive subject.
The place is also loosely sourced. TMZ says only “Texas,” and the Brownsville detail comes from People via Hollywoodlife. And no family member has spoken publicly, per Hollywoodlife. A few outlets are filling that gap with commentary, and I’d leave the family alone.
I’d also skip theories. Nobody has said why, and anything beyond what the family and authorities share is guessing.
What We Don’t Know
- A medical examiner’s finding
- Statements from his family or fiancée
- Funeral or memorial plans
- Reactions from the “Breaking Bad” cast or AMC. None appear in the reports I could open
Remembering Him
Mitte spent his career showing that a disabled character could be a regular teenager on screen, and he spoke up for others who wanted the same chance. That’s the part of his story that’s on the record, and I’d lead with it.
