Mahershala Ali stars as a devout Muslim hitman in “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” an Amazon MGM Studios drama written and directed by Bassam Tariq. It’s in US theaters now, and there’s no streaming date yet.
The title is long, and some outlets shorten it to “Your Mother.” Below is the plot, the cast, where you can watch it, and the places where release details don’t match across sources. I haven’t seen the film, so I’m only reporting what others have written.
Quick Facts
- Title: “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” (Rotten Tomatoes uses commas)
- Director and writer: Bassam Tariq
- Star: Mahershala Ali as Latif
- Distributor: Amazon MGM Studios
- Production companies: Orion Pictures and Two & Two Pictures
- Runtime: about 1 hour 51 minutes (Rotten Tomatoes) or 112 minutes (Wikipedia)
- Rating: R, for language, violence and bloody images, and some sexual content
- World premiere: September 12, 2026, at the Toronto International Film Festival
- Streaming: none announced
What Is the Plot?
Latif is a devoutly religious hitman who is trying to balance his work, his faith, and being a father. After his wife dies suddenly, he’s left as the sole caretaker of his children. Per Rotten Tomatoes and Wikipedia, he sets out across Houston to protect them while threats close in and he faces doubts about his beliefs.
Hollywoodlife quotes Ali talking to NPR about the character: “I believe that Latif is a man that, I think, discovers that he is struggling with his belief, his faith.” On Latif’s anger, he said, “he’s just angry. I think he’s angry about it all.”
Where Does the Title Come From?
Hollywoodlife says it comes from an Islamic tradition in which a man asks the Prophet Muhammad who deserves the best treatment. The Prophet answers “Your mother,” and repeats it three times across the man’s three questions. Wikipedia describes the title as a reference to a hadith about the treatment owed to one’s parents.
Cast
Here’s the cast per Wikipedia, with roles:
| Actor | Role |
|---|---|
| Mahershala Ali | Latif |
| John Cho | Hwan Yoon, a religious leader |
| Giancarlo Esposito | Abdul Malik |
| Abubakr Ali | Hatty |
| Tramell Tillman | Talib |
| Tiffany Boone | Fugazi |
| Laith Nakli | Mike Mahmoudi |
| Adia | Fatiha, Latif’s daughter |
| Jahleel Kamara | Qadir, Latif’s son |
| John Henry Ward | Elder Wade |
| Ashley P. Jones | Dana |
| Aaron Goodson | Khalis |
Rotten Tomatoes names Cho’s character “Pastor Hwan,” while Wikipedia calls him “Hwan Yoon, a religious leader.” I’d go with Wikipedia’s longer version or just say “Hwan.”
Who Made It?
Tariq wrote and directed the film and produced it with Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari, per Rotten Tomatoes and Wikipedia. Hollywoodlife credits him as the “filmmaker” without saying what he did.
Wikipedia also says:
- Development was announced in February 2025.
- Filming began in March 2025 in Atlanta and wrapped on May 29, 2025.
- Cinematography is by Katelin Arizmendi, and editing by Cam McLauchlin.
- Son Lux composed the score. The soundtrack was released September 25, 2026.
Ali and Tariq had previously worked together on the unproduced Marvel film “Blade,” per Wikipedia. Tariq left that project in September 2022, and Ali left it by July 2026. I’m passing that along as Wikipedia reports it.
When Did It Come Out?
This is where the sources disagree.
- World premiere: September 12, 2026, at TIFF, per Wikipedia. Tariq received the TIFF Rising Talent Award in connection with the premiere, per the same page.
- Limited release: Friday, September 25, 2026, per Movie Insider.
- Expansion: Friday, October 2, 2026, per Movie Insider. Wikipedia also says it opened in the US and Canada on October 2.
- Rotten Tomatoes: lists October 9, 2026, as a wide release.
I’d go with September 25 for the limited opening and October 2 for the broader one, since two sources agree on that pattern. The October 9 date may be a later expansion, but I couldn’t confirm it.
How to Watch
In theaters: It’s playing in US theaters now. Hollywoodlife describes it as “select” theaters, and Rotten Tomatoes lists a “Buy Tickets” option. Check a ticket site like Fandango or AMC for showtimes near you.
At home: No streaming, digital, or disc date has been announced, per Movie Insider. Hollywoodlife says that because Amazon MGM Studios made it, it will likely land on Prime Video or MGM+, but it presents that as an expectation. Treat it as a guess.
What the Critics Say
These are reported scores, not my opinion.
- Rotten Tomatoes: 97% on the Tomatometer from 97 reviews and 94% audience score, per its page. Wikipedia lists 97% from 95 reviews, an average of 8.0/10.
- Metacritic: 84 out of 100 from 30 critics, which it labels “universal acclaim,” per Wikipedia.
- Critics consensus: Rotten Tomatoes calls it an “inventive and tonally unique action flick” with a big heart, and singles out Ali’s performance.
Scores shift as reviews come in, so I’d check the live page before you quote a number.
Box Office
Rotten Tomatoes lists $204,000 in US gross, which looks like an early, limited-run figure. Wikipedia lists $1 million. They were probably captured at different times. I’d wait for a source with a date on it.
What Didn’t Sit Right in the Coverage
The Hollywoodlife article is thin. It doesn’t name the full cast, the runtime, or the writer credit, and it says “currently playing in select theaters” without giving a date.
The release date mix-up is also unhelpful if you’re planning a trip to the theater. And I’d be careful with the “will stream on Prime Video” talk, which nobody has confirmed.
What We Don’t Know
- A streaming or digital release date
- Whether the October 9 date is a wider expansion
- A reliable box office total
conclusion
“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” is a Houston-set drama about a hitman and father, with a strong cast and very positive early reviews. If you want to see it on the big screen, go now, since there’s no home release date.
