“Violent Night 2” is set to hit US theaters on December 4, 2026. David Harbour is back as Santa Claus, and this time he’s joined by Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus.
The first film was a bloody, R-rated Christmas action comedy. The sequel promises more of the same, with a bigger cast and a very different setting. Here’s what’s confirmed, what’s still unclear, and one mistake I spotted in the coverage.
Quick Facts
- Release date: December 4, 2026, in the US
- Distributor: Universal Pictures
- Director: Tommy Wirkola
- Writers: Pat Casey and Josh Miller
- Producers: Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, through 87North
- Runtime: 111 minutes, according to Wikipedia
- Music: Dominic Lewis, returning from the first film
When Is the Release Date?
The film opens December 4, 2026, which puts it a few weeks before Christmas. Empire reported the date when the film was announced. Universal is releasing it in cinemas.
Hollywoodlife says attendees at New York Comic-Con might get an early look. I couldn’t confirm that anywhere else, so I’d treat it as a maybe.
Who Is Directing? A Mistake to Watch For
The film is directed by Tommy Wirkola, who also made the first one. Wikipedia, Empire, and Film Focus Online all say so, and Wirkola has given interviews about the sequel.
Hollywoodlife’s page description names Mike Flanagan as director. That doesn’t match any other source I checked, and the article body never mentions him. I think it’s a slip, probably mixed up with Flanagan’s “Carrie,” which launched around the same time. If you see his name tied to this film, it’s wrong.
The Cast
Confirmed:
- David Harbour as Santa Claus
- Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus
- Jared Harris as Mason, a ruthless gangster
- Joe Pantoliano, Maxwell Friedman, Daniela Melchior, and Andrew Bachelor, whose roles haven’t been specified
Still unclear: whether anyone else from the first film comes back. Empire says it couldn’t confirm that Leah Brady, who played Trudy, or other original cast members return.
What Is the Plot?
The official premise is simple. Santa lands on the naughty list and loses his magic. He has to find the true meaning of Christmas again while taking on a gangster who’s terrorizing a small community.
A synopsis quoted by Film Focus Online fills in more. The gangster is squeezing merchants at the Silver Bell Mall. Santa has forgotten the spirit of Christmas and must rediscover his faith in goodness, while Mrs. Claus joins the fight as backup.
What Wirkola Has Said
In an interview with Discussing Film, Wirkola explained what he wanted to do differently.
- Tone and scale: He kept the R-rated action and Christmas setting but “didn’t want to play it safe,” pushing the violence and scope further.
- The setting: The story moves from the first film’s mansion to a shopping mall, which he compares to a Western town. A gangster extorts the shop owners, and Santa gets pulled into the fight.
- Fight scenes: One favorite sequence takes place in a cookie shop kitchen, where baking tools turn into weapons. The reindeer also get action moments of their own.
- Mrs. Claus: The team once considered a cameo for her in the first film but dropped it. Here, Wirkola wanted her to be Santa’s equal as a fighter.
- Cast size: The sequel has a larger ensemble, with supporting characters whose arcs tie into Santa’s own story.
He also said the team spent a long time looking for the right premise, and that early ideas didn’t work.
Where and When It Was Filmed
According to Wikipedia, filming began in Winnipeg on September 2, 2025, and wrapped on October 15, 2025. Wirkola says much of it was shot in a mostly abandoned mall in Canada, where only a few stores were still open. That gave the crew a lot of room for the action.
Empire’s article says filming was scheduled for September 2026. That seems to be left over from its original announcement, since the other sources agree it finished in 2025.
Trailer Details
Sources don’t quite agree here. Wikipedia cites a first trailer reported by The Hollywood Reporter on April 15, 2026. Film Focus Online says Universal released a trailer on August 4, 2026. It’s possible one was a teaser and the other a full trailer, but I can’t tell from what I read.
Neither source describes the footage in detail, so I won’t guess what it shows.
A Quick Refresher on the First Film
“Violent Night” came out on December 2, 2022. Wirkola directed, and the cast included Harbour, John Leguizamo, Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Hassell, Leah Brady, and Alexis Louder.
In the story, Santa, a former Viking warrior, gets stuck at a wealthy family’s estate in Greenwich, Connecticut. Mercenaries take the family hostage to steal $300 million from a vault, and Santa fights them to rescue everyone, including young Trudy.
It cost about $20 million and grossed $76.6 million worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes lists 74% positive reviews, Metacritic 55 out of 100, and audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore. Hollywoodlife says the first film is streaming on Netflix.
What Didn’t Sit Right in the Coverage
A few things bothered me while putting this together. The director mix-up is one. The filming date error is another. And the plot summaries are all so short that it’s hard to know what the story really is beyond “Santa loses his magic and fights a gangster.”
I also can’t tell if the sequel’s tone will land. The first film got a mixed score from critics, with Metacritic at 55. A bigger, bloodier follow-up could be great fun, or it could be more of the same with more noise. I’ll wait for reviews.
What’s Still Unknown
- Whether original cast members like Leguizamo or Brady return
- The roles for Pantoliano, Friedman, Melchior, and Bachelor
- Any early critic reactions, since the film hasn’t screened yet
- Whether an early Comic-Con preview is real
Where to Watch
Only in theaters on December 4, 2026. If you want to catch up first, the original is on Netflix, per Hollywoodlife. Streaming availability can change, so check your own service.
